Vadhavan Port, located in Palghar district of Maharashtra on the Arabian Sea coast, is set to become one of India’s deepest ports. Overseen by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the port’s construction is estimated to cost ₹76,200 crore. It is a joint venture with Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), where JNPA holds a 74% stake and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) holds 26%.

Strategic Importance of Vadhavan Port
Approved by the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership, Vadhavan Transhipment Port will double India’s container handling capacity. It is strategically located approximately 130 kilometers from Mumbai and plays a crucial role in the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC). With a natural draft of 20 meters, the port can accommodate large container ships efficiently, minimizing dredging and operational costs.
Vadhavan Transhipment Port Project Details
The port will have a total capacity of 298 million metric tons (MMT) per annum, including handling 23.2 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of containers. Phase 1 aims to handle 15 million TEUs, expanding to 23.2 million TEUs in Phase 2. It features nine 1,000-meter container terminals, four multipurpose berths, four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.
Connectivity and Economic Impact of Vadhavan Transhipment Port
To enhance connectivity, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Ministry of Railways will establish road and rail links respectively, connecting the port to national highways and rail networks. This infrastructure development spans 571 hectares and requires an investment of ₹4,000 crore. The port is expected to generate employment for 1.2 million people and ease congestion at existing ports.
